Three Days in Magical Madrid
Enjoy the latest blob by the Avid Traveller:
We start with a bit of history: Madrid has been the capital of Spain since mid-sixteenth century, when Philip II transferred the capital from Toledo. Between 1601 and 1606 the capital of Spain was moved to Valladolid but subsequently returned to Madrid.
In the Autumn of 2024, the AvidTravellrer started a whirlwind 72-hour journey to Madrid with pals, beginning with a lively, history-filled city exploration. Walking through bustling squares, we immersed ourselves in the city's history and vibrant environment.
Our group's diverse preferences resulted in different activities. Suzanne and Richard began the very firstday one night with a memorable dinner at Bodega de los Secretos, a relaxing, centuries-old restaurant loaded with charm. The following my partner and I joined a tapas and white wine walking tour led by the passionate Mario. We went to several local hotspots, consisting of a mushroom specialized bar and an Iberian delicatessen, while learning about Madrid's history and culture.
Day 3 was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill setting up a paella masterclass at the glamorous Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez guided us through the complexities of making standard Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was coupled with tastings of local sherries and white wines, making it one of the trip's highlights.
We rounded off the weekend with a see to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate location showcased the raw feeling and beauty of flamenco dancing, providing a best cultural capstone.
Throughout the trip, we took pleasure in extraordinary meals at local dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we enjoyed authentic Spanish meals such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the well known calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, using a glimpse into Spain's rich culinary customs.
